Our Story
We are the Potato Eaters.
Like many Singaporeans, my husband and I are self-professed “Jiak Kantang”. Local slang for Asians who have adopted Western habits and lost some of their cultural roots. We struggled with learning Chinese in school and were happy to leave it behind the first chance we could. A stint in China later on in our adult lives made clear the gap between our limited ability, and what was useful both professionally and socially.
Like many Potato Eaters who are now parents, we want a different outcome for our children. Effective Communicators, not Idiom Parrots. Language Lovers, not just Exam Takers. Equipped with a language that they can call on seamlessly now and in the future. And so we do plenty to fill the bucket.
But what we also need, is to light a spark. To bring back joy, inspiration and motivation into the process of learning.
So Potato Eaters, meet Rice. With the right books, you can light that spark. We have experienced it first hand with our Potato Eater children, often found curled up with their favourite Chinese storybooks on a lazy weekend morning. We consider it nothing short of a miracle.
Life is too short for boring stories. Everything we recommend has the stamp of approval from the kids at home. Whether it is laugh out loud humour, or stories that make us reach for the tissues, these are our family favourites and have earned their place in our home library. We also created the tools to help you make reading less daunting and more fun from the get-go.
To my fellow Potato Eaters, give it a go and you might just discover a totally different experience of learning Chinese. One that dares to be enjoyable and fun.
